You will get to know that the mantra of my life is
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live The life you’ve imagined.”
~Henry David Thoreau
That is a small part of the quote and truly the part that I have embraced throughout most of my adult life.
There is a second part of that quote that gets left off.
“As you simplify your life the laws of the universe will be simpler. ”
I often forget this part of it and find that I need to remind myself to simplify. And to listen to the universe when it tells me to do so.
For me simplify means stopping, resting, taking a break and breathing it all in. It doesn’t mean I have to stop everything for all the time. It just means taking a step back. I have so many interests and a busy household I tend to go full out and forget to take little breaks. Spring and summer and early fall seem to be the time that I am the most active. There’s just so much more to do with school and gardening and sports and keeping up with the household.
But come November my thoughts turn towards Simplicity. My focus is to making my home cosy and warm. To create spaces where my family are drawn to sit down get comfortable and feel nurtured. I embrace the shorter days because shorter days means less time for the world to pull me away and more time for the home to pull me in. Everything is done with warmth and comfort in mind. I declutter and put away the busy parts of the home and bring out comforts like soft fuzzy pillows and blankets. Winter socks replace the flip-flops. Candlelight replaces sunlight. Out come the crockpots and out goes the barbecue. And for a few weeks after all of this changing over for the season my family constantly ask me where I put things. “Away” is always my answer.
For a fall month November for me is the simplest one. There are no holidays to prepare for no birthdays no challenges to this mindset. We give ourselves permission to find a blanket in a corner of the big couch and just look out the window and watch the day go by. No pressure. No guilt.
For the month of November do less. Simplify. Order in and skip the dishes. Watch a movie and stay in. Don’t think of all that needs to be done. Think of what you need to do for you. For your own peace of mind and well-being and that of your family.
Make simplicity part of living the life you imagined.
